Avoiding These Three Common Golfing Injuries
Golf is often known as a lifetime sport, meaning that people of all ages and all walks of ages enjoy playing golf every now and again. And while it may be a casual sport to some, others try and play as often as they possibly can, but apart from the injury from the odd golf ball, there are some other injuries that can occur over time after having spent enough time on the course.
These are common injuries that plague golfers of all skill levels, but usually only start causing problems after a few years playing, although these can just as easily apply to those that are playing for the first time, and haven’t taken the time to do warm-up exercises. Not only are these incurred from frequently swinging, but also due to the many miles that the average golfer walks while out on the course.
- Rotator Cuff Tendinitis
The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons located in the shoulder. Inflammation in this area causes a condition known as rotator cuff tendinitis, which is most often a sign of overuse. This condition tends to be caused by overhead movements, as well as repetitive motions in the shoulder. - Prevention: Rotator cuff tendinitis is most often due to a mixture of bad posture and poor swinging technique. To prevent this from occurring, it’s best to approach a seasoned golfer or trainer and be taught proper swinging techniques.
- Treatment: If the tendinitis has already occurred, the first course of action is to rest the shoulder as much as possible, using ice to reduce the swelling, along with anti-inflammatory medication.
- Knee Problems
Golf swings require that the player tattered their knees as they turn their hips and shoulders while following through. This repetitive movement can damage the cartilage structure in the knee, causing pain and difficulty walking.
- Prevention: Knee problems occur fairly frequently in golfers due to weakness in the thigh muscles, with the hip flexors, quadriceps, and hamstrings being the most affected. Golfer’s elbow, also known as medial epicondylitis, is caused by inflammation within the muscles and tendons in the elbow. It’s a very common injury for golfers, most commonly caused by repetitive motions. Persistence pain on the inside of the elbow is a common symptom.
- Prevention: Improper swing technique is the most frequent cause, and it can be prevented with the correct training.
- Treatment: The same treatments as above, including non-steroidal ant-inflammatory medication, as well as physical therapy.
